Formalized in the early 1900's in Japan, Shiatsu is a form of deep tissue massage in which various pressure points are stimulated throughout the body in a rhythmic flow to alleviate pain, increase range of motion, and relax the nervous system. Shiatsu translates as "finger pressure", although practitioners make use of their entire body weight and use their elbows, forearms, knees, feet, or knuckles to breakup knots and adhesions to alleviate pain. Shiatsu utilizes the knowledge of fascial bands (meridians) rather than isolated muscle groupings, which make it a far more holistic and effective treatment for pain. Classically preformed on a mat on the floor, you will be fully clothed and the massage will consist of stimulating pressure points in various parts of the body and different stretching techniques. It is a very deep-tissue style massage that ensures results, and can often be deeply relaxing. If you prefer oil massage instead, let us know at the time of your booking.
